Another day, another left-back story to get our teeth into over that late-afternoon virtual pint. Both Liverpool and Newcastle have been linked with a number of defenders already this season, and here’s another one for Reds fans to watch!
Liverpool’s Director of Football, Damien Comolli has highlighted Italian international Domenico Criscito as the answer to Kenny Dalglish’s left side problem. The 24 year old, currently playing for Genoa has been earmarked for a potential summer move by the Merseyside based club and it’s being reported that it could take up £12 million to get hold of him.
With Insua and Konchesky likely to move on during the window, Kelly injured and Johnson playing out of position, Dalglish is left with just Fabio Aurelio as his first choice left-back. It’s obvious that the club need to strengthen in that position, and Dalglish has already been told that there is money to spend. Liverpool have been linked with both Newcastle’s Jose Enrique and Roma’s John Arne Riise in the past few days, on these very pages, but Cristico is very much at the higher end of the market.
The question is, would Liverpool spend £12 million on the defender, when they could arguably get a player more accustomed to the English game for less? It might be the risk Dalglish has to take, if he is to show intent in next season’s Premiership campaign. Cristico can play at centre-back and in an advanced left-wing position, and so far this season has made 27 appearances for Genoa who are currently ranked 11th in Serie A.
