Since Manchester City were taken over by Sheikh Mansour in 2008, their fans have enjoyed success on the field that they could only have dreamt of a decade ago.

They have won Premier League titles, FA Cups and League Cups with their star-studded squad that has been assembled at extremely high cost.

Indeed, in the eight years since they have spent a crazy amount of money on transfers, some of which have gone on to be massive favourites at the club but there have been many that fans have considered to be a waste of money.

It is always a risk that when spending the money that they have that certain players are going to prove that they were not worth it.

The punters here inside the Football Transfer Tavern have compiled a list of the FIVE of their most expensive flops......

Jo

Jo

The Brazilian Jo was one of City's first signings after the takeover.

He commanded a £18 million transfer fee from CSKA Moscow but like several others in those first few months he turned out to be an expensive flop.

In total during his spell at the Etihad, he scored only once in 21 Premier League appearances and only six in 38 matches in total.

Even loan spells at Everton and Galatasaray couldn't inspire him to find his form and in 2011 he returned to his native Brazil to sign for Internacional.

Robinho

Robinho

Robinho was the name of everybody's lips when he joined City on deadline day in 2008.

He was held in the very highest regard at the time of the transfer and was expected to set the world on fire at the Etihad.

However things didn't turn out like that, despite scoring a solid 14 Premier League goals in his first season, he failed to score in 10 appearances in his second season which was interrupted by injury, and despite all the billing about him, he left City for just £15 million, having scored only 16 goals in 53 appearances for the club during a two-year stay.

Joleon Lescott

Joleon Lescott

Many eyebrows were raised when City paid a whopping £22 million to Everton for Lescott in 2009.

Fair enough, he had performed well at Goodison Park and had been capped for England but it always looked like a move that was doomed to fail.

He never really established in the City side, making just over 100 league appearances in his five years in Manchester and he left in 2014 on a free transfer to join West Brom, eventually moving on to Aston Villa where he seems destined to be relegated from the top flight.

Jack Rodwell

Another English player to leave Everton for City was Jack Rodwell.

Rodwell had built a really good reputation for himself on Merseyside and the general opinion was that he was risking his future by moving to City and being a bit-part player.

That was to be the case as well as despite a £12 million transfer fee he appeared only 16 times in the Premier League for them, in which he failed to win over both Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini, and he is now embroiled in a relegation scrap with Sunderland.

Eliaquim Mangala

ELIAQUIM MANGALA

In 2014, City broke the British transfer record for a defender when Eliaquim Mangala arrived for a fee believed to be around £42 million after a number of add-ons. Spending

that sort of fee on a player that didn't know the English game always looked like a risk and at times he has looked really out of place in the City defence, and other sides have looked to capitalise on some erratic form when up against him.

At least unlike the others on this list, he is still at the club and has the chance to prove his doubters wrong by becoming a force in the heart of their defence, but it will take something special to prove he is worth his transfer fee.
