These 2 loan deals would undoubtedly transform Dean Smith’s Aston Villa

Despite sitting in 15th place in the second tier of English football, things could be looking up for Aston Villa. The Midlands-based club have recently brought in Dean Smith and a host of other new faces – including John Terry – to steady the ship, and there’s every reason to believe this could be possible.

Smith did an excellent job managing Brentford, where he had minimal funds available to him, playing some of the most attractive football in the league, and always finishing close to the playoffs spots. Now, with much more talent at his disposal, Smith is charged with carrying out a mammoth rescue mission.

Of course, with such a difficult task ahead of him, the Englishman may be looking at bringing in some new faces this January. With that in mind, here are two loan deals we believe could transform Aston Villa…

James Collins

Collins isn’t exactly a loan deal, so to speak. However, his signing would function in a very similar way – as a short-term fix to a very large problem. Joint with Sheffield Wednesday and Reading, Aston Villa have conceded the second most goals in the league (20), beaten only by Preston North End (24). As far as any promotion hopefuls are concerned, leaking this many goals so early on in the season is never a good sign.

Collins, 36, as old as he may be, would provide invaluable experience at the back – much like John Terry did last season.

After being released by West Ham, the Welsh international has been training with Aston Villa with a view to sign a permanent deal. We expect this deal to be one of Dean Smith’s first significant decisions at the club.

Mason Holgate

Mason Holgate is another player who would do brilliantly for Aston Villa, if there was ever a chance of signing him on a loan deal. The young defender has a tackle success rate of 80% in the Premier League so far this season, and has put in some all-round good performances in the games we’ve watched him play.

With Leighton Baines’ career drawing to an end, it may be worth sending out Holgate for one last loan spell before he’s completely exposed to first-team football.
