Manchester United appear to have already surrendered the Premier League title, and having seen some of their rivals cruise past opposition in the Champions League this week, the pressure is on next week for Mourinho’s men to deliver in Seville.
The Red Devils would, in any other season, be far closer to the top of the table had it not been for Man City’s imperious form this term. Romelu Lukaku has brought goals to the team, while Paul Pogba is playing well enough once more, while the signing of Alexis Sanchez should improve them further.
However, our landlord here in the Tavern is still wary that one or two of the United squad are not quite up to the job, and he thinks this summer could see a fair few players shipped out.
One such player who he thinks will be in big danger is defender Chris Smalling, who has become the least fancied of Mourinho’s central defensive choices this term.
The former Fulham man has improved over the years there is no doubt, but the form of Phil Jones, the signing of Victor Lindelof, and the impending return of Eric Bailly could well mean time might be up for Smalling, and he may well want to move on as well.
There is little doubt Smalling is still a decent Premier League defender, but if United are to push on further and really challenge the elite, then Smalling could be one who is sacrificed as Mourinho looks for his squad to have complete quality within his squad.
United fans, what do you think? Time for Smalling to go? Let us know in the comments!
