Time to leave: The Southampton defender who must quit St Mary’s to force move to Liverpool ASAP

It’s been all change at St Mary’s for Southampton this summer as Mauricio Pellegrino readies his players for his first Premier League campaign in-charge on the South Coast.

He’s got a big job on his hands to bring success to St Mary’s and there’s a few players on the books there that have been tipped to leave before the window slams shut.

And one of those is Virgil van Dijk, who’s future at the club has been in doubt for months now. A transfer to Liverpool had been tipped earlier this summer but it was rebuffed after the Reds made an unsavoury approach for the defender.

But now, it’s more important than ever that the Reds continue to press forward with a move for this key man, regardless of what happened earlier this summer.

Whilst Liverpool’s Premier League rivals have been quick to add to their squads, you get the impression that Jurgen Klopp is still missing that giant at the heart of the defence at Anfield.

He needs to bring a leader in to really hold that back-four together and it’s been something they’ve been missing for a few years now. But more than ever, it’s essential that Liverpool show they’ve got some metal in this transfer window.

We’ve seen some big transfers over the past few weeks and the Reds need to throw their hat into the mix too.

Their squad is looking decent and we’ve seen some good things from them during pre-season. But moving forward, bringing in van Dijk would really round off their summer business with aplomb.

Landlord’s Verdict

van Dijk is as good a player as you get at this level and it’s imperative that Liverpool make a move for his services. They need a player to hold the defence together and he’s shown at both Celtic and Southampton he’s capable of doing just that.

Klopp needs to spend the money needed to bring him in, regardless of what it will cost.
