Despite playing well against Manchester City – a team who had recorded more goals and victories over Aston Villa than any other club they have played – the struggling Villans still lost last night. The season only has ten games remaining and things are starting to look increasingly bleak for the West Midlands club, yet with performances picking up despite the slender defeats, all is not lost.
Southampton have looked shaky of late and given the slide in form from Wigan Athletic, there are clubs around them who can be leapfrogged. Paul Lambert may be disappointed with the season so far but flashes of quality from certain players and a good run towards the final third of the season could make all the difference for the Villa Park-based side.
We at the tavern think we are entering make or break time for Villa and given they are playing those around them in the next couple of weeks, Paul Lambert’s young side have their fate in their own hands to a certain extent and will still believe that retaining their long-term Premier League status is achievable. They may have to hope that those around them drop points but we think there are a couple of other things the club can do to help aid their move up the table.
