With all the fine weather we’ve been having, the constant bank holidays and the general feeling of national pride that comes with a Royal Wedding, I thought that things were getting a little bit out of hand! We’re British for goodness sake! We’re not meant to be happy! We’re meant to say things like, ‘Ooo might turn out nice again.’ ‘Soups good.’ ‘Mustn’t grumble.’ ‘I couldn’t possibly take another biscuit.’
According to Vitalfootball.co.uk Everton are currently plotting a move for Preston’s Billy Jones, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
So, who’s this Billy Jones then eh? Well, he currently plays for Preston North End. He’s a defender, with a surprisingly good goalscoring record. He’s managed 6 this season, and has a career total of 21 goals. To give you some perspective, Shola Ameobi the Newcastle ‘striker’ has 47 career goals.
Jones is 24, so he’s about the right age for Everton, and he’s cut his teeth on the lower rungs of the English league system making him the archetypal David Moyes signing. As Vitalfootball say, he’s out of contract at the end of the season, and with Preston relegated he probably won’t be hanging around. Step forward Bill Kenwright and David Moyes, who’ll be doing the usual Everton trick of recruiting cheaper players from the lower leagues rather than look abroad.
An uninspiring signing yes, but a sensible one, and one that will probably go ahead this summer! And if there’s one thing we British like, it’s being sensible and keeping our heads. Must dash, I have a street party to get to……
