It’s been another busy day in the Football Transfer Tavern for Tottenham fans and now Danny Griffiths from Metro has arrived in the bar to confirm that a possible move for Steaua Bucharest highly-rated centre-back Vlad Chiriches has been revived and is now close to completion.
Reports yesterday suggested that the deal for the 23-year-old was off when jailed Steaua owner Gigi Becali cancelled the deal due to Spurs’ insistence to rush the transfer through. However according to the player’s agent Spurs will defeat interest from Serie A duo AC Milan and Roma to land the defender in a £7million deal.
Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has lined up a move for the Romanian international as a replacement for English star Steven Caulker who has departed White Hart Lane for Cardiff City in a surprise £8m transfer.
But it look when the controversial and outspoken owner Becali reportedly called Steaua’s general manager and questioned: ‘Who are Tottenham? Why can’t they wait? Don’t do the transfer! I’m not selling! I am Gigi Becali!’
Despite these reports Chiriches’ agent Ioan Becali claims that Spurs have been successful in their offer and the player will become a member of Villas-Boas’ squad once personal terms have been agreed.
He said: ‘[Roma] have not raised their offer of £5.7m. Tottenham, however, are now up to £7m and have taken the player.
‘It is at 99 per cent certain – it only lacks the signature of the boy, who will arrive soon.’
Chiriches, a stylish ball-playing defender, was a mainstay as Steaua reached the knockout stages of the Champions League last season.
