Spurs fans in the Tavern were gutted at the recent news that star man, Toby Alderweireld, failed to complete Thursday’s training session as speculation around the Belgian’s contract talks continues to drone on. Alderweireld signed for Spurs from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2015 but his contract is set to expire in June 2019.
In his two and a half years at Hotspur way the man valued at £31.5 million our friends over at Transfermarkt has endeared himself to Spurs fans as strong and reliable defender and been a key figure as Spurs have recorded third and second place finishes meaning they’ve played Champions League football in two back to back seasons in Premier League history.
This makes the news of hostile contract talks even harder for Spurs fans to stomach and many of the clubs fans have hit out against Daniel Levy’s strict wage structure that prevents any player being paid over £100,000 p/w. Alderweireld has been locked in contract talks for a number of weeks, however his case hasn’t been helped by his recent injury that he picked up back in early November during Spurs’ historic 3-1 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League.
Upon his return, the former Southampton man has found it hard to break back into the first time owing to the excellent form of compatriot Jan Vertonghen and new signing Davinson Sanchez, however with fixtures in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup building up, having Alderweireld back will be crucial.
With that in mind, here’s a closer look at the fans’ reaction to Tottenham’s tweet about the player’s fitness.
