There are gasps of surprise around the Football Transfer Tavern as a report from the Metro is read out by the Landlord. The publication suggests that Tottenham could challenge Arsenal for unsettled Liverpool striker Luis Suarez should Gareth Bale complete his record-breaking deal to Real Madrid.
The La Liga side are believed to have submitted an offer worth over £85million for the Welsh international and although Spurs chief Daniel Levy is determined to not sell his star man this summer it will be hard to reject the world-record transfer fee.
Should Spurs take the mega-bucks on offer it would leave the club in a very strong position to challenge Arsenal for the Uruguayan star who has repeatedly insisted that he wants to depart Anfield before the new season kicks off.
The Gunners have already seen several bids turned down for the former Ajax man as Liverpool kick their heels but Spurs could make things very interesting by joining the race for Suarez.
However as one Liverpool punter points out why would Suarez leave Liverpool for Spurs when neither side has Champions League football next season and wouldn’t it just be a sideways step in his career? The Landlord admits that it is hard to disagree with that assessment as today’s report are taken in by all situated in the tavern.
