The Manchester United manager has been keeping tabs on CSKA Moscow goalie, Igor Akinfeev, for some time and there was speculation in the keeper’s native Russia that he might be moving to United as far back as 2009. Since then, Ferguson has kept any interest quiet and there has certainly been no confirmed approach for Akinfeev.
CSKA currently lie in 7th in the Russian league after 3 games, and Akinfeev has become a well-established member of the team. Although a goalie he wears the number 35 shirt. According to the club site, Akinfeev holds the Russian record for the most amount of clean sheets in Continental competition with 26. A member of the Russian squad he’s considered one of the best goalkeepers in Europe today. Many Russians compare him to the great Lev Yashin….. But what am I, his biographer??
Sir Alex wants a goalie who can fill the undoubtedly massive shoes which will be left by Van Der Sar’s retirement. When they lost Schmeichel, United struggled to find a competent replacement with Fabien Barthez coming closest to matching the great Dane’s legacy. That’s not to say he was any good….that’s just to say he wasn’t as bad as Mark Bosnich or Massimo Taibi.
Sir Alex has been scouring the continent for the best goalkeeping talent, with names like Manuel Neur and Martin Stekelenburg being hotly tipped for a move to Old Trafford. The word on Akinfeev has gone quiet, but with Fergsuon not making any concrete moves the 25 year old Russian could well be on United’s radar.
The bidding might well start iro £8 million.
