A transfer worth £7.5million has been agreed with the French club with an introductory payment of £5million followed by a further £2.5million in add-ons.
The Villains are yet to agree personal terms with the Cameroon International, so nothing is set in stone just yet. Villa reportedly scuppered a deal for La Havre defensive midfielder, Gueida Fofana, when no agreement could be made.
Lyon coach, Claude Puel, has admitted that he is resigned to losing the 27-year-old, stating finances as the reason for his imminent departure.
“We know what Jean II’s brought us recently, he’s an important member of the team,” Puel told L’Equipe.
“But there are financial factors a club has to consider. I’m considering them.
“Replacement? No, our winter transfer market will be our players returning to top form. We have a quality group.”
Villa have struggled to keep clean sheets this season, however, Makoun’s presence in front of the defensive could break up attacks and spark counters of their own. Despite playing a defensive role in the middle, Makoun is also known to have a decent shot. The Cameroon International scored the only goal in Lyon’s home win over Real Madrid in the Champions League last year with a 25-yard strike.
Houllier is said to be looking at a plethora of targets during the current window and it is likely that the Frenchman will now turn his attention to his front line. Villa, for all their fantastic approach play, have not scored enough goals this season and have been closely linked to several striking options. Should any moves be made, it is likely that out-of-favour target-man John Carew will be made available by the Midlands outfit.
