17 year old Southampton winger, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, has been linked with a summer move to Spanish champions Barcelona. The England Under-21 is a target for a host of Premier League clubs, including Manchester United and Arsenal and has been one of the stars of the season in League 1.
He was hotly tipped to be moving to Arsenal, way back in January and in fact it was rumoured that Arsene Wenger had already personally agreed a deal with the youngster. It would seem however that the deal fell through. Southampton chairman, Nicola Cortese, seems to have put his foot down.
Apparently, he rejected several excellent offers from Premier League clubs including one from Liverpool which went ‘straight into the bin.’ The Saint’s have declared that they are concerned with the player’s welfare claiming that were he to move to the Premiership he would find himself at the bottom of the ladder in terms of first-team chances. Southampton feel that Ox (as he’s affectionately known) would benefit more from regular playing time at a lower level.
Manchester City and Liverpool were both supposed to be monitoring the situation, but the lack of first-team chances at those clubs is hugely off-putting to the young man. But when Barcelona come in for you, you don’t really give a hoot about first team opportuinites!! If this is a serious bid, then Southampton could make a tasty £10 million from the sale.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has made 28 appearances for the Saints and scored 6 goals. He recently got his first under-21 cap and impressed several members of the coaching team.
