The 25-year-old striker has been linked with a move to Merseyside since the summer and now it would appear that Roy Hodgson is ready to offer £6million.
The former Junior Barranquilla forward may be a savvy piece of business for the reds, he will be relatively affordable and has had top level experience. He was also exceptionally prolific in Colombia where hit 42 goals in just 79 appearances and impressed during his time in Turkey.
Hodgson is desperate for decent back-up for Fernando Torres and the Colombian can certainly score goals. However, worries about adjusting to a new country may be a stumbling block in any attempt to sign the striker.
Gutierrez moved back to Colombia without the permission of his club and cited medical reasons as his reason for leaving. He only gave the club a phone call to explain his absence and has been told he can leave by coach Senol Gunes. Liverpool have enough problems already and investing in a player that has the potential to break his contract would be a large risk for Hodgson to take.
The striker certainly has the talent though and the promise of playing Premier League football may be enough to help Gutierrez settle in. However, adjusting to a new life in England could offer very similar problems that he has struggled to adjust to in Turkey.
Gutierrez is the latest in a whole host of strikers linked with a move to Merseyside, including Eden Hazard, Darren Bent and Fernando Llorente, however he is certainly the cheapest option. Under-fire boss Hodgson is thought to have ‘five or six’ players on his wish-list for January and the Reds look certain to splash the cash in the new year.
