# Unsung Hero: Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil flies under the radar as Gunners drop points at home

**Arsenal drew 2-2 with Southampton in what proved to be a frustrating afternoon for the north London club with one player proving to fly under the radar from Unai Emery’s side.**

The Saints opened the scoring through Danny Ings after Ryan Bertrand played the England international through from a quick free-kick [(via BBC)](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50443050).

[Alexandre Lacazette](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50443050) then equalised after a cross from the left found Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, whose blocked shot fell to the Frenchman to smash home.

However, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men took back the lead from the penalty spot through James Ward-Prowse before Lacazette equalised deep into stoppage time.

Lacazette proved to be his side’s man of the afternoon in a brilliant performance from the 28-year-old. As well as a brace, the forward dominated in the attack, having the most shots on target and completing the most dribbles of any player [(via WhoScored)](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1376015/LiveStatistics/England-Premier-League-2019-2020-Arsenal-Southampton).

However, it was Mesut Ozil who proved to be the man who escaped everyone’s attention on his third consecutive Premier League start for the club.

The German international was the [second-most fouled player and completed the joint-second most dribbles (3)](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1376015/LiveStatistics/England-Premier-League-2019-2020-Arsenal-Southampton) as he proved to be a nuisance on the ball for Southampton’s defence.

However, his creative prowess was also in full-flow as Ozil didn’t give the south coast side’s defence a moment’s rest. He played the [most key passes (4)](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1376015/Live/England-Premier-League-2019-2020-Arsenal-Southampton) out of Emery’s men and the [most final third passes](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1376015/Live/England-Premier-League-2019-2020-Arsenal-Southampton) of any player on the pitch.

The Express agreed with this assessment as they gave Ozil a seven out of 10, commenting on his creative performance.

They said: “Found space after Arsenal changed shape and created plenty of openings for his attacking team-mates, staking his claim for a spot in Emery’s first-choice XI.” [(Source: The Express)](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1208408/Arsenal-player-ratings-Southampton-Alexandre-Lacazette-Unai-Emery-defenders-flop)
