# Unsung Hero: Wolves’ Conor Coady leads by example during win in Turin

**Wolves took a significant step closer to reaching the group stage of the Europa League after winning the first leg of their play-off round tie with Torino last night.**

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team leave Turin with a 3-2 lead to take back with them for next Thursday’s second leg at Molineux. \[[via BBC](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/49428424)\]

They took the lead shortly before half-time when Gleison Bremer unwittingly headed into his own net from a free-kick that was whipped into the Torino penalty area. \[[via BBC](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/49428424)\]

Diogo Jota doubled Wolves’ lead just before the hour mark, finishing to the net from a low Adama Traore cross, before Lorenzo de Silvestri replied almost instantly for Torino. \[[via BBC](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/49428424)\]

Raul Jimenez edged Wolves further in front in 71 minutes, running through the home side’s defence before finishing past Salvatore Sirigu, but a late penalty converted by Andrea Belotti means that the men from the Black Country will take just a one-goal lead into next week’s second leg. \[[via BBC](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/49428424)\]

Jota and Jimenez have both kept up their impressive scoring runs in the Europa League qualifying campaign – the [former has now scored three goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/diogo-jota/leistungsdaten/spieler/340950) in the qualifiers, while the [latter netted his fifth of the competition](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/raul-jimenez/leistungsdaten/spieler/206040) last night.

The win in Italy also owed a lot to one man at the other end of the pitch, with club captain Conor Coady leading by example against the Serie A outfit.

The 26-year-old repelled multiple Torino attacks over the course of the game and made one outstanding contribution early in the second half when, with Wolves’ lead at 1-0, he got a toe to the ball just as Belotti was preparing to shoot, the chance ultimately being squandered by Simone Zaza. \[[via Express & Star](https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/football/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2019/08/22/torino-2-wolves-3-europa-league-report/)\]

Alex Dicken of [Birmingham Live](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/wolves-player-ratings-adama-jimenez-16802732) described it as a “[cool intervention](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/wolves-player-ratings-adama-jimenez-16802732)” and added that Coady “[looks at home at this level](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/wolves-player-ratings-adama-jimenez-16802732)“.

In the [Express & Star](https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/football/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2019/08/23/torino-2-wolves-3-player-ratings/), Tim Spiers wrote that the defender gave “[a true captain’s performance](https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/football/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2019/08/23/torino-2-wolves-3-player-ratings/)” and felt that he was man of the match, citing that his [eight clearances were at least three more than anyone else made on the night](https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/football/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2019/08/23/torino-2-wolves-3-player-ratings/).

[Ever-present for Wolves since January 2018](https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/football/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2019/08/23/torino-2-wolves-3-player-ratings/), Coady continues to demonstrate his importance to the team from defence while the likes of Jota and Jimenez take the goalscoring glory.
