# Unsung Heroes: Callum McGregor shone in Celtic’s victory against Motherwell

**After their disappointing defeat in the [UEFA Champions League](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53884053) against Ferencvanos, which saw them knocked out of the competition before the group stage, Celtic got back to winning ways by beating Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership.**

The [3-0](https://www.sofascore.com/celtic-motherwell/WWscX) win pushed the Hoops up to third in the table with two games in hand on Glasgow Rangers who are first, per [SPFL](https://spfl.co.uk/league/premiership/table). Goalscorers Albian Ajeti, Christopher Jullien and James Forrest will get understandable recognition, however midfielder Callum McGregor put in a great performance which we have looked at in our unsung heroes feature.

The Scottish midfielder has made [280](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/callum-mcgregor/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/120977) appearances for the Hoops, scoring [49](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/callum-mcgregor/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/120977) and assisting [57](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/callum-mcgregor/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/120977), but there is speculation he could depart in the current transfer window as former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers [would like](https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/callum-mcgregor-leicester-celtic-contract-4470635) to take the player to Leicester City. He showed why he is attracting interest as he picked up a 7.5 rating, per [SofaScore,](https://www.sofascore.com/celtic-motherwell/WWscX) against Motherwell.

In his central midfield position he needs to not just help out the defence but also the attack and he did just that as defensively he won seven ground duels, made three tackles, blocked one shot and also made two clearances, per [SofaScore](https://www.sofascore.com/celtic-motherwell/WWscX).

Meanwhile at the other end of the pitch, not only did he pick up an assist, per [SofaScore](https://www.sofascore.com/celtic-motherwell/WWscX), but he also managed to make four key passes whilst completing 92% of his passes, as well as completing three of his four dribbles.

These stats show how good a performance McGregor produced, and it will be another boost that the Hoops kept a [clean sheet](https://www.sofascore.com/celtic-motherwell/WWscX) and were able to score three without Odsonne Edouard leading the line due to [injury](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/odsonne-edouard-fitness-update-celtic-22592662).

Hopefully the midfielder can continue to provide the club with these influential performances and if he does stay, he could be a great part of history if he helps the club win the league as it will be their [tenth consecutive title](https://talksport.com/football/537546/celtic-vs-rangers-who-has-won-more-scottish-premiership-titles/) in a row – it would be the [first time](https://talksport.com/football/537546/celtic-vs-rangers-who-has-won-more-scottish-premiership-titles/) a Scottish team has managed to do this.
