# Aston Villa: Steven Gerrard tipped to reignite Joe Gomez interest

**As per [GiveMeSport](https://www.givemesport.com/87971179-aston-villa-transfer-news-gerrard-looking-for-top-class-signing-22-5m-ace-fits-the-bill), Daily Mail journalist Tom Collomosse has tipped Aston Villa to reignite their interest in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez and seek an agreement over the transfer once the summer window opens.**

### The Lowdown: Gomez previously linked with Villa

Villa have struggled defensively of late, having [conceded](https://www.skysports.com/aston-villa-results) three goals to Leeds United in a thrilling draw last week and losing 1-0 to 17th-placed Newcastle United on Sunday.

With Ezri Konsa [suspended](https://www.whoscored.com/Matches/1549785/Preview/England-Premier-League-2021-2022-Newcastle-United-Aston-Villa), new arrival [Calum Chambers](https://www.sofascore.com/aston-villa-newcastle-united/OP) was thrown into the starting XI against the Magpies. With just [four Premier League appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/calum-chambers/leistungsdaten/spieler/215118) under the 27-year-old’s belt this season, this illustrates Villa’s lack of depth and experience at centre-back.

As a result, it does not come as a surprise that Gerrard’s side were linked with Liverpool’s Joe Gomez during the January window.

The 24-year-old has slipped down the Reds’ ranks this season following [Ibrahima Konate](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/12316877/ibrahima-konate-liverpool-sign-centre-back-from-rb-leipzig)’s arrival and with Joel Matip sustaining [fitness](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joel-matip/leistungsdaten/spieler/82105) and [form](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/26/Show/England-Liverpool) for a prolonged run of games. Consequently, the Cameroonian has pushed Gomez out of Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI, with the England international having played just [12 minutes](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-gomez/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/256178) of top-flight football this term.

### The Latest: Gerrard tipped to reignite Gomez interest

Collomosse has tipped Gerrard and Villa to reignite their interest in Gomez in a bid to come to an agreement with Liverpool once the summer transfer window opens. Speaking to [GiveMeSport](https://www.givemesport.com/87971179-aston-villa-transfer-news-gerrard-looking-for-top-class-signing-22-5m-ace-fits-the-bill), the journalist claimed:

*“I think he looks like that ideal type of player to go into somewhere like Villa at the end of the season.*

*“They’re looking for a top class centre-back and although he’s still improving in some ways, Joe Gomez is an England international, Premier League champion and played in the best competitions.*

*“I think that’s definitely one to keep an eye on for the summer.”*

### The Verdict: Fantastic target

Gomez could prove to be a fantastic signing for Gerrard’s side. At just 24, the has a [wealth of experience](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/joe-gomez/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/256178) – he has featured in 83 Premier League matches and played on Europe’s biggest stage, having secured a Champions League title, Club World Cup and Super Cup among 34 continental and global appearances.

[Jurgen Klopp](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/385277-jurgen-klopp-praise-for-joe-gomez) has always been full of praise for Gomez, with one of the manager’s biggest claims describing the 24-year-old as a ‘sensational footballer’. Therefore, it does not come as a surprise that Gerrard is trying to entice the defender to Villa Park ahead of a proposed transfer.
