# West Brom: Baggies failed in Martin Braithwaite bid

**[According to Mundo Deportivo](https://www.mundodeportivo.com/futbol/fc-barcelona/20210203/491868069055/barca-braithwaite-west-bromwich-albion.html), West Bromwich Albion failed in a late bid to sign Martin Braithwaite on loan from Barcelona with an option to buy.**

### **Baggies wanted Braithwaite**

The Baggies were busy at the end of the transfer window, bringing in Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan from Arsenal and signing Okay Yokuslu from Celta Vigo.

It appears they were looking for another striker, though. This report says they made a loan offer to sign Braithwaite from Barca, with a €15m (£13.2m) purchase option included in the approach. The 29-year-old, though, did not want to make the move to the Midlands.

### **Understandable**

It is not hard to understand why Braithwaite was against leaving the Camp Nou. Barcelona are one of the biggest clubs on the planet and are currently playing Champions League football – West Brom, meanwhile, are battling to stay in the Premier League and can only dream of competing in Europe’s premier club competition.

Braithwaite is a back-up at Barca – he has started just nine La Liga matches this campaign ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/martin-braithwaite/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/95732)) – so it makes sense for Sam Allardyce and co to try their luck. With [92](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/martin-braithwaite/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/95732) career goals to his name, the Denmark international’s record is solid if unspectacular – we will never know whether he would have been an asset to the Baggies.
