# West Brom: Frank McAvennie tips Tom Rogic for successful Baggies move

**Pundit Frank McAvennie has tipped new [West Bromwich Albion](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/west-brom-news/) signing Tom Rogic to thrive at the club under Steve Bruce.**

### **The Lowdown: West Brom sign Rogic**

After [nine successful years](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tom-rogic/profil/spieler/213672) at Celtic., where he made an incredible [272 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tom-rogic/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/213672), the [6 foot 2](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tom-rogic/profil/spieler/213672) Australia international left the Scottish champions this summer upon the expiry of his contract.

Having been without a club since July, earlier this week it was announced that Rogic had signed a [one-year deal](https://www.expressandstar.com/sport/football/west-bromwich-albion/2022/09/12/west-brom-sign-former-celtic-man-tom-rogic-on-one-year-deal/) with the Baggies, with the [Championship](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/championship-news/) club having the option to extend this by a further 12 months.

### **The Latest: McAvennie’s comments**

Following Rogic’s unveiling as a West Brom player, McAvennie was questioned over whether the Baggies would be seen as a step down from Celtic in the player’s career.

In response, the pundit told [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/mcavennie-issues-big-west-brom-verdict-after-tom-rogic-news-confirmed/): “Not really because he’s nearly 30 now.

“West Brom is a big club. Everyone thought he was going back to Australia or even to America but he obviously still thinks he’s got that competitive streak in him.

“I don’t think he would’ve played much for Celtic, no matter how much he was a wonderful player. The pace the boys are playing now, Tom might have been a bit slow. There will have been options for him, there’s no way he didn’t but he obviously thinks West Brom is the one. He’s got those itchy feet.

“When I left West Ham I went to Hong Kong and it was a great time but the football wasn’t up to my standard and I came back and signed for Celtic.

“Steve Bruce will look after Rogic, I think it’ll be a partnership made in heaven because Rogic is one hell of a player and if Steve Bruce can get the best out of him, it’s only good for them.”

### **The Verdict: Strong signing**

Having bagged [six goals and six assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tom-rogic/leistungsdaten/spieler/213672/plus/0?saison=2021) in 27 Premiership appearances last season, Rogic’s arrival adds an alternative playmaker to Bruce’s struggling squad.

Having amassed [12 games in the Champions League](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tom-rogic/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/213672) in his career and a further [three appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tom-rogic/leistungsdaten/spieler/213672/plus/0?saison=2021) in the Europa League last season, the 29-year-old has a wealth of experience playing at the highest level.

Therefore, his presence in the Albion XI could add a strong character to the Baggies’ team – something which is needed after their woeful start to the Championship campaign, having [won just once](https://www.skysports.com/championship-table) in their opening ten league games.

Having been hailed as [‘outstanding’](https://www.footballscotland.co.uk/spfl/scottish-premiership/tom-rogic-labelled-outstanding-celtic-22894978) by Australia assistant coach Rene Meulensteen, picking up Rogic on a free transfer looks like a masterstroke from West Brom.
