West Brom: Journalist makes Davie Selke claim

West Brom have failed in their efforts to complete a deadline day move for Hertha Berlin striker Davie Selke, according to journalist Elias Burke.

The Lowdown: West Brom after a striker

The Baggies have made a disappointing start to their Championship season, sitting 14th in the table after just one victory in their first seven league matches.

It has become apparent that more firepower is required in Steve Bruce’s squad, with striker Daryl Dike out with a long-term injury that could keep him out of the World Cup.

Now, a key update has emerged regarding West Brom’s quest to sign a new attacker.

The Latest: Selks bid fails

Taking to Twitter, Burke claimed that the Baggies saw a bid for Selke rejected, acting as a big blow:

“West Bromwich Albion have made contact in recent days w/ Hertha BSC striker Davie Selke, but I understand talks broke down. Selke scored at The Hawthorns in #WBA’s final pre-season friendly against Bundesliga side. Albion still on the lookout for a No. 9.”

The Verdict: Could it cost promotion?

This is an undoubted setback for West Brom, who look so short of options in the attacking third, clearly not helped by Dike’s cruel latest setback.

The concern is that a lack of goals will ultimately prove fatal in the Baggies’ efforts to return to the Premier League, with too much onus on Karlan Grant currently.

Selke could have been a shrewd signing for Bruce’s team, having scored against them during pre-season and bagging four Bundesliga goals in ten starts for Hertha last season. Instead, they must focus on alternatives at the eleventh hour.
