Luke Hatfield from The Express and Star wouldn’t be surprised to see Alex Mowatt named the new West Brom captain.
Mowatt became Valerien Ismael’s first signing as Baggies manager when he joined on a free transfer after his deal with Barnsley ran out.
Will West Brom sell Johnstone?
The 26-year-old midfielder was a key part of the Barnsley side that finished in the play-offs last season – scoring eight times, whilst adding seven assists in 44 Championship appearances.
Mowatt was Ismael’s skipper last season at Oakwell, and Hatfield told The Transfer Tavern that he wouldn’t rule it out happening again:
“It wouldn’t surprise me at all to be honest. Mowatt is a player that was vital for him at Barnsley last season, and as with any new manager coming into any club – those club roles are always up for debate.”
Jake Livermore is the current West Brom skipper, but he hardly featured last season and it’s unclear whether he’ll be part of Ismael’s plans moving forward.
With that in mind, having performed so well at Barnsley together, Mowatt will surely be one of the first names on the teamsheet, so it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see him wearing the armband next season.
