Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former England midfielder Rob Lee explained why he believes West Bromwich Albion should avoid making a move for Christian Benteke.
Lee thinks Baggies should avoid Benteke
The Baggies have been heavily linked with a move for Benteke (The Daily Mail), who previously played under Sam Allardyce at Crystal Palace.
Lee, though, believes the Midlands outfit should avoid a move for the £8.1m-valued 30-year-old (Transfermarkt). He explained:
“I can see why everybody thinks they can get Christian Benteke scoring goals like he did at Aston Villa but that was eight years ago and he’s hardly scored a goal since. He’s gone from being an unbelievable talented youngster, really at Villa (to) not being able to score goals.
“I look at him and I think “you’ve got everything, you’re big, you’re quick, you’re strong, technically, you can score goals because you’ve proved it at Villa” ao I think everybody thinks they can change him but can you? Sam needs these goals quick. Is he going to score you goals quickly to get you five in five? His record recently would say no. It’s alright saying ‘yes, and he’s going to be a pest to people’ but at the end of the day, if West Brom don’t score, they aren’t going to win games.”
As Lee said, Benteke’s goal record in recent years has been poor. In his last three full campaigns in the Premier League at Palace, he has scored just six goals, while he has managed just three in 14 games so far this term (Transfermarkt). He looks to be a striker devoid of confidence, which should be a worry for Allardyce.
Would you liked to have signed Christian Benteke?
However, were he able to retrieve his best form, he could be a fantastic arrival at the Hawthorns. In his first campaign at Selhurst Park, he bagged 15 league goals, and he managed 42 in the top flight in three full seasons at Villa. As such, a deal would be a gamble, but there is a possibility it could be a stroke of genius.
Lee, however, seems to think the first outcome is more likely, which is why he thinks it would be a risk for Albion to sign Benteke.
