West Brom made a late attempt to sign former Arsenal and England attacker Theo Walcott on deadline day, according to Sky Sports commentator Gary Weaver.

The Lowdown: Frustrating deadline day

The Baggies made some good signings during the summer transfer window, from John Swift to Jed Wallace, but it ended on a sour note on Thursday.

A move for Fulham man Josh Onomah collapsed at the eleventh hour, leaving Steve Bruce fuming and meaning West Brom arguably look short on attacking options.

It wasn't only in the middle of the park where the Baggies were looking to strengthen late on, however, following a new update.

The Latest: West Brom made Walcott move

Speaking on Sky Sports' coverage of West Brom's Championship clash with Burnley on Friday night [via West Brom News], Weaver claimed Walcott was a late target:

"They launched a bid to sign Theo Walcott. Although that never really took off."

The Verdict: Could have been an inspired signing

At 33, Walcott isn't the player he once was, which is only natural, but that's not to say that he couldn't have been a superb short-term signing for West Brom.

The speedy forward has won 47 caps for England and scored 108 goals for Arsenal during his time there - 78 in the Premier League overall - while Jack Wilshere once described him as 'unbelievable'.

Walcott could have brought a much-needed goal threat to the Baggies' attack, as well as a fear factor because of his past achievements, but it was seemingly a move that wasn't meant to be.

Perhaps it will end up being a blessing in disguise, given his injury problems, but it would have been exciting nonetheless.
