West Bromwich Albion have made contact to sign Liverpool midfielder Leighton Clarkson for the remainder of the 2022/23 Championship campaign, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Standout performer

The Reds starlet joined Aberdeen on a season-long loan last summer in a bid to find regular game time and gain some valuable experience, and it’s fair to say he’s made quite the impression north of the border.

Dons manager Jim Goodwin has recently been full of praise for the 21-year-old at the Pittodrie Stadium, admitting that he doesn’t want to lose him this month, but after some hugely impressive performances, there is now a three-horse race for his signature.

The Latest: West Brom eyeing Clarkson

Football Insider report that West Brom, Reading and QPR have all ‘registered their interest’ in taking Clarkson for the second half of the term, with the trio having identified him as an ideal ‘target’.

The Scottish outfit are ‘keen’ to retain the maestro’s services, though Liverpool do have the option to terminate his deal, recall him and then send him out on another development loan to a different club.

The Verdict: Exciting signing

Clarkson has been described as ‘similar’ to footballing legend Philipp Lahm by Jurgen Klopp, and he would be an extremely exciting signing should he put pen to paper at The Hawthorns.

The Blackburn-born talent already has five goals and two assists to his name in all competitions this season and is a versatile player with the ability to operate in three positions across the midfield (Transfermarkt).

Clarkson is also an England U20s international, and Carlos Corberan’s push for promotion would be significantly bolstered if he was able to wrap up a deal for the talented prospect before the end of the window.
