Sam Allardyce wants Crystal Palace’s James Tomkins to be his first signing at West Bromwich Albion, according to Football Insider.
Allardyce was hired as the new Baggies boss on Wednesday, replacing Slaven Bilic in the hot-seat.
With the transfer window just a couple of weeks away, it is being reported that they are looking at signing 31-year-old Tomkins, who Allardyce coached when he was the boss at Palace.
There are certainly plenty of positives when looking at what Tomkins could bring to the Hawthorns. With 263 Premier League appearances to his name, he has plenty of experience in the top flight, and having already having played under Allardyce it should not take him too long to adapt to his new boss’ style of play.
Roy Hodgson also appears to be a big fan, praising Tomkins as ‘excellent’ during a run of form last season.
Valued at just £3.6m by Transfermarkt, he would likely not cost a fortune, which will also be music to the ears of the board. However, the interest is incredibly predictable, and is far from inspiring. Tomkins would certainly help from a defensive point of view, but the Baggies have scored just 10 goals in the top flight this term, which is only better than two other sides.
Would you like to sign Tomkins?
The fact that Allardyce is looking at a defender straight away gives an indication of what the Baggies supporters can expect from the new man. It is unlikely to get them on the edge of their seat.
In other news, West Brom fans praise this former player.
