# West Bromwich Albion: David Ornstein reveals January interest in Marcos Alonso

**In a recent article for [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/2372557/2021/02/08/ornstein-lukaku-and-ings-on-city-radar-arsenal-target-cover-for-tierney-in-summer/), David Ornstein revealed that West Bromwich Albion had considerable interest in Marcos Alonso in the January transfer window.**

According to [Ornstein](https://twitter.com/David_Ornstein/status/1358788964652613633), the Baggies left-back, Kieran Gibbs, was the subject of late interest from Inter Miami in the winter window, however, the financials of the offer made by the American side ‘weren’t right’ for either West Brom or Gibbs.

However, prior to the potential deal for the [£2.88 million-rated](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kieran-gibbs/marktwertverlauf/spieler/44792) 31-year-old falling through, Ornstein claimed that Sam Allardyce’s side were [eyeing up a move](https://theathletic.com/2372557/2021/02/08/ornstein-lukaku-and-ings-on-city-radar-arsenal-target-cover-for-tierney-in-summer/) for Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso, who was a player ‘[among targets](https://twitter.com/David_Ornstein/status/1358788964652613633)‘ as a possible Gibbs replacement.

So far this season, the [£11.7 million-rated](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/marcos-alonso/marktwertverlauf/spieler/112515) 30-year-old has found game time hard to come by at Stamford Bridge following Chelsea’s summer signing of Ben Chilwell, with the Spaniard making just [six Premier League appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/marcos-alonso/leistungsdaten/spieler/112515).

Having said that, since the [arrival of Thomas Tuchel](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/55801917), Alonso has found himself more involved once again, [playing in three](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/marcos-alonso/leistungsdaten/spieler/112515) of the four league fixtures the German boss has overseen so far.

**Transfer Tavern Take**

With Gibbs’ contract [set to expire](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kieran-gibbs/marktwertverlauf/spieler/44792) at the end of the season, West Brom will require a replacement for the former Arsenal man in the summer, which could leave the door open for a future move for Alonso.

However, a move for a player of the calibre of the 30-year-old will almost certainly hinge on whether the Baggies remain a Premier League side next season, something which, at present, is [looking rather unlikely](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/premier-league/table).

Furthermore, as previously stated, with Alonso appearing to be somewhat back in the picture under Tuchel, perhaps Chelsea will be less willing to part with the defender now than they were when Frank Lampard was at the helm.
