# West Ham: David Moyes eyeing Mauro Icardi

**[West Ham](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/west-ham-transfer-rumours/) are admirers of Paris Saint-Germain striker Mauro Icardi, according to [Il Mattino](https://www.ilmattino.it/sport/calcio/inter_lukaku_ecco_la_fase_2_oggi_altro_contatto_chelsea-6759234.html).**

### The lowdown

After an initial loan spell, PSG paid [£45million](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mauro-icardi/profil/spieler/68863) to sign Icardi from Inter Milan permanently in July 2020, and he’s gone to make 92 appearances for the French club.

While he [featured in 30 matches overall](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mauro-icardi/leistungsdaten/spieler/68863) last season, he only made ten Ligue 1 starts and wasn’t selected for a single Champions League fixture. Clearly, the 29-year-old is some way down the pecking order.

And now PSG have [apparently](https://www.ilmattino.it/sport/calcio/inter_lukaku_ecco_la_fase_2_oggi_altro_contatto_chelsea-6759234.html) reached an agreement with Sassuolo to sign Gianluca Scamacca for an initial €40million (£34.3million).

### The latest

The [report](https://www.ilmattino.it/sport/calcio/inter_lukaku_ecco_la_fase_2_oggi_altro_contatto_chelsea-6759234.html) explains that, in order to complete the signing of Scamacca, PSG need to clear space by offloading the [£19.8million-rated](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mauro-icardi/leistungsdaten/spieler/68863/plus/0?saison=ges) Icardi.

And that’s alerted West Ham, who ‘like’ the player, as do their Premier League rivals Wolves.

### The verdict

Icardi’s goalscoring record is very strong. [In 383 club appearances, he’s found the net 203 times](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mauro-icardi/leistungsdaten/spieler/68863/plus/0?saison=ges), a strike rate of one every 1.89 matches.

His return of [23 goals in 64 Ligue 1 outings](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mauro-icardi/leistungsdaten/spieler/68863/plus/0?saison=ges) wouldn’t appear particularly strong on the surface given PSG’s dominance, but it’s a lot more impressive when you consider he’s only been afforded [35 starts](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/106964/History/Mauro-Icardi) in the French top-flight.

Signing the Argentine, named [Serie A Footballer of the Year in 2018](https://sport.sky.it/calcio/serie-a/2018/12/03/gran-gala-del-calcio-aic-2018-premiati), would leave West Ham with some enviable attacking depth ahead of their next European campaign.

French legend [Jean-Pierre Papin](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/icardi-psg-striker-slammed-by-papin/m657jvy67483z8b6luud2oqn) has billed him a ‘pure goal hunter’ but also raised ‘great doubts about his personality’, and therein lies the concern for David Moyes as he weighs up a move.

**In other news, [there’s been a promising update for West Ham in their pursuit of a La Liga star](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/west-ham-transfer-rumours/west-ham-report-shares-promising-januzaj-update/).**
