# West Ham: Fans react to Unai Nunez transfer link

**West Ham United are ready to trigger the release clause of Athletic Bilbao centre-back Unai Nunez in January, that is according to a report from Spanish news outlet [AS](https://as.com/futbol/2019/12/23/primera/1577056846_198971.html).**

The 22-year-old will reportedly cost the Hammers a fee of €30 million (£25.7 million).

Nunez has spent the last couple of seasons trying to break into the first team at the San Mames Stadium, but he has struggled to hold down a starting berth.

Indeed, this season he has started just five of Bilbao’s 18 La Liga games, although he did play 90 minutes as they kept a clean sheet against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in their most recent outing ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.com/unai-nunez/leistungsdaten/spieler/338285/plus/0?saison=2019)).

A centre-back may well be on Manuel Pellegrini’s wish list in January, given that they have shipped 28 goals this term in just 17 matches ([BBC Sport](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/table)).

However, it seems that most West Ham fans are a little sceptical that their board would fork out so much money for the young defender.
