# West Ham: Fabrizio Romano drops James Ward-Prowse claim

**Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has now dropped a [West Ham United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/west-ham-news/) transfer claim involving Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse.**

### **The Lowdown: Ward-Prowse rumours swirl**

Back in January, the Spanish media [reported](https://www-fichajes-net.translate.goog/noticias/james-ward-prowse-despierta-interes-grandes-clubes-premier-league-manchester-united-manchester-city-tottenham-hotspur-20220116.html?_x_tr_sl=es&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=sc) that [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) clubs Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham were all interested in signing the Saints midfielder in the summer.

More recently, the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10845157/Tottenham-Daniel-Levy-Antonio-Conte-challenge-titles.html) have claimed that Fabio Paratici is interested in a deal to sign the 27-year-old for Spurs, whilst [ExWHUemployee](https://www.westhamzone.com/news/exwhuemployee-west-ham-expected-to-make-offer-for-southampton-midfielder-james-ward-prowse/) has claimed that West Ham are now expected to make an offer for the England international.

### **The Latest: Romano’s news**

Romano has now shared his own update on Ward-Prowse’s transfer interest, amongst a number of rumours suggesting various potential destinations.

Taking to an interview on [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_h9NlZ7TSXg) with Chris Cowlin, Romano claimed (via a transcript on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/ChrisCowlin/status/1533809514331389958)):

“No update on him (joining Spurs). West Ham are tracking him though.”

The Hammers are [widely expected](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-west-ham-in-advanced-talks-to-sign-nayef-aguerd-as-house-hunting-begins/) to wrap up a deal for Rennes defender Nayef Aguerd in the coming days, so perhaps Ward-Prowse could be their second major target this summer.

### **The Verdict: Would be a great signing**

The Saints skipper’s set-piece abilities have always been lavished with high praise, and his numerous fantastic free-kicks this season have now pushed him towards [David Beckham’s Premier League record.](https://talksport.com/football/1099694/man-utd-transfer-ward-prowse-beckham-free-kick-record-world-cup-2022/)

With 11 goals in all competitions, the midfielder was Southampton’s [top scorer](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/teams/southampton/top-scorers) for the 2021/22 campaign, earning plaudits from football analyst Statman Dave as having had a [‘memorable season’](https://twitter.com/StatmanDave/status/1532316099999670273).

However, according to former teammate [Charlie Austin](https://talksport.com/football/1099694/man-utd-transfer-ward-prowse-beckham-free-kick-record-world-cup-2022/), it is “the nuts and bolts of his game: running hard, winning the ball back, and leading his team, \[which\] are phenomenal”.

Austin’s comments suggest Ward-Prowse could be a great acquisition for many top-half sides, including the likes of West Ham, who could do with signing another midfielder following the retirement of club legend [Mark Noble.](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61524319)
