# West Ham: Hammers reportedly interested in summer move for Nathaniel Clyne

**The latest reports by [Goal](https://www.goal.com/en-ie/news/chirivella-offered-five-year-liverpool-deal-as-midfielder-closes-/scgbulo4hpgo1hws6r3bt0t6t) have suggested that West Ham are interested in Liverpool defender Nathaniel Clyne, who is available on a free transfer in the summer.**

Clyne has not featured at all this season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament rupture during the Reds’ summer tour of the USA in July 2019, as per [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathaniel-clyne/profil/spieler/85177), and it looks unlikely that the club will extend his contract as he had already been playing [backup](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/nathaniel-clyne/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/85177) to [Trent Alexander-Arnold](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/trent-alexander-arnold/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/314353) at Anfield.

The former England right-back is being monitored by the likes of West Ham, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth, where he was on loan at last season, as per [Goal.](https://www.goal.com/en-ie/news/chirivella-offered-five-year-liverpool-deal-as-midfielder-closes-/scgbulo4hpgo1hws6r3bt0t6t)

However, it is up for debate whether the signing would be a beneficial one for the Hammers, as the club currently have Jeremy Ngakia, Ryan Fredericks and Pablo Zabaleta occupying the right-back position. Whilst 35-year-old Zabaleta will possibly be approaching retirement in the near future, Clyne might stunt the growth of academy prospect Ngakia, who has impressed since his debut earlier this campaign.

Even though the 19-year-old has only made four appearances, he looks to be a great player in the making, as he has averaged three tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game, as per [WhoScored.](https://www.whoscored.com/PlayerComparison) If you compare that to Clyne’s loan spell at Bournemouth, the youngster fares better as the Liverpool man only managed 2.4 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game in his time with Eddie Howe’s side, via [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/PlayerComparison).

Fredericks also seems to be decent cover for Ngakia and the Hammers should look to use their wage money in other positions that are not as strong rather than making a move for Clyne.
