# West Ham: Reliable journalist shares latest on Bednarek ‘talks’

**Reliable journalist Jack Rosser, [formerly](https://uk.linkedin.com/in/jack-rosser-06910797) of The Evening Standard, has shared what he knows on [West Ham United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/west-ham-news/) talks to sign Southampton defender Jan Bednarek.**

### The Lowdown: Hammers eye defensive boost?

The Hammers, having suffered from a defensive crisis at Rush Green, are currently still awaiting a return for summer signing Nayef Aguerd as Angelo Ogbonna’s fitness also remains a serious question mark ([Claret & Hugh).](https://www.claretandhugh.info/hammers-exploring-loan-for-saints-defender/)

This has prompted reports of a possible further defensive addition before the window shuts it’s doors on Thursday with the likes of Bednarek and Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi [linked.](https://twitter.com/AndreasBoeni/status/1564596006938877953?s=20&t=F3zknoYPxbY2HRY6odUWgw)

Irons centre-back Craig Dawson is also currently tipped with a [potential last gasp move away](https://twitter.com/JackRosser_/status/1564591712147849216), motivating West Ham to pursue a late central defensive option further.

### The Latest: West Ham will move if Dawson goes

According to Rosser, it is believed that talks have indeed been held over Bednarek, though a move will depend on if Dawson departs the London Stadium.

He explained (via[Twitter)](https://twitter.com/JackRosser_/status/1564591712147849216):

*“West Ham have held talks over a potential loan move for Southampton’s Jan Bednarek should Craig Dawson leave. Aston Villa and Wolves both made approaches for Dawson.”*

### The Verdict: Get it done…

We believe the 26-year-old would come as a very astute rotational option for David Moyes, especially on loan with little financial risk.

According to [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/18/Archive/England-Southampton), Bednarek finished the 2021/2022 top flight campaign as Southampton’s fifth-best player by average match rating.

The ‘[no-nonsense](https://twitter.com/ZachLowy/status/1282773621501558785)‘ Poland international also [made more interceptions and clearances per 90](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/18/Archive/England-Southampton) than any of his teammates – backing how he could come in to this West Ham side and provide some serious steel in the same manner that Dawson did.
