Writing on Twitter, journalist Sam Inkersole has shared David Moyes’ team news – with the West Ham United boss confirming that striker Michail Antonio has suffered a ‘new injury‘ and looks set to miss their clash with Manchester United this afternoon.
Antonio, who was originally on the sidelines with a hamstring problem picked up at the end of October, will now miss the Hammers match against Manchester United with what looks to be an unrelated problem.
Do West Ham need a striker in January?
Antonio late blow
Moyes steadily eased the Englishman back into training and, once he thought Antonio was fully fit and raring to go, introduced him against Aston Villa on Monday in his first start since October.
However, the Scotsman has now been dealt a late, fresh blow to Antonio and confirmed in his press conference that he will miss the game this afternoon after picking up a ‘new injury‘ – as relayed by Inkersole.
Transfer Tavern take
Given the excitement surrounding his return and how crucial he is to West Ham, this comes as a real setback for the Irons, who must now rely on Sebastien Haller once again.
Haller scored just his second goal of the season in a most recent start away to Sheffield United, with Moyes and the fans alike hoping he can start to replicate the kind of form that prompted GSB to snap him up in a club record deal from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Time will tell whether Haller delivers the goods against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, but West Ham will need him too given this latest setback for Antonio.
