West Ham United have been urged to sign Michael Keane by his former team-mate Paul Robinson.

The Lowdown: West Ham targeting Keane

With Football Insider detailing that Craig Dawson is now expected to leave the Hammers, David Moyes is in the market for a new centre-back in the January transfer window.

An extra reinforcement is also needed in light of recent injury woes, with Kurt Zouma undergoing surgery for a knee problem, while Nayef Aguerd suffered a thigh tear during Morocco's World Cup victory against Spain.

The Liverpool Echo reported that the Irons are among three Premier League clubs who are monitoring the 29-year-old's situation at Goodison Park.

The Latest: Robinson's plea to West Ham

Speaking to Football Insider about Keane, who is now expected to leave Everton on loan in January, Robinson waxed lyrical about the impact that the defender would have at the London Stadium.

The former England goalkeeper said: “It is a no brainer if you ask me. He is a top-quality player. I played with him at two clubs, Burnley and Blackburn. He was only young at Blackburn.

“He has every attribute you would want in a centre-half. Yes, there is a mistake in there but he is mentally strong. He is more than capable of being a top centre-half.

“He is not getting his opportunity at Everton so a change might be good for him. A fresh start under a manager like David Moyes, who is very good manager, might be just what he needs. It could be a great move for both.”

The Verdict: Could be a decent swoop

Keane would be a decent signing for West Ham as an initial stop-gap until the end of the season, and he could be a good option to have on loan, with Moyes then able to assess whether he wants to make the move permanent.

Despite being labelled 'immense' by Liverpool Echo journalist David Prentice in the past, the defender has fallen out of favour at Everton this season, only registering one appearance in the Premier League.

The fact that the 29-year-old cannot get into a struggling Toffees team may cause concern for some West Ham fans, but he would offer a lot to the defence as a backup option, as indicated by an average of 3.13 aerial duels won per 90 over the past year, placing him in the 93rd percentile compared to his positional peers in Europe's top five leagues.

A fresh start may be exactly what Keane requires to reignite his form, and Moyes should undoubtedly pursue a move for him in the January window given the Irons's injury woes involving their current centre-backs.
