Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan believes West Ham could do a great bit of business in the summer which would involve a swap deal with Queens Park Rangers.
The Hammers have been heavily linked with the Hoops’ young attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze, in whom fellow Premier League sides like Crystal Palace are also interested, per Football Insider.
However, it looks like the Irons might have a bargaining chip which might see them beat other clubs to the signing of Eze, as the Championship side currently have Jordan Hugill on loan and the forward has been in great form for QPR, so they might look to acquire him on a permanent deal in the summer.
Would you like to see Eze at West Ham?
Speaking to Football Insider on a potential swap deal, Whelan said: “I’d like to have Eze on board, I really admire him, I think he’s a fantastic midfield player,”
“He’s very comfortable on the ball, very composed, great engine, gets forward, great feet going into that final third, I’ve praised him so much when I’ve been at Leeds and seen him, watched him play and I’ve seen him grow and get better.
“He seems like a great acquisition for the future, to get a player like that on board, because I think he’ll be a fantastic player, I really do. It doesn’t surprise me that clubs like West Ham are looking at him.
“It would be a great swap deal. The clubs will be happy with that, he’ll have the opportunity to showcase his ability at the very top level with West Ham.”
It’s hard to disagree with Whelan here; it would be a great swap deal for both sides. With QPR looking likely to still be in the Championship next season, it will be hard to keep Eze due to his great performances this season which have seen him on average make 1.9 key passes a game, whilst being fouled 2.4 times a game and completing three dribbles per game, via Whoscored. He has also picked up 12 goals and eight assists this season and, at just the age of 21, it looks like he could be a great player for the future.
Meanwhile, Hugill has also impressed at Loftus Road, where he has struck 13 goals in all competitions, and it could be very hard for the west London club to find a replacement in the summer. Ideally, both parties would be pleased with the swap deal.
For now, nothing new has materialised on how keen the Irons are to bring Eze to the club, but the prospect of using Hammers outcast Hugill as potential bait in bringing the QPR youngster to London Stadium could put them in pole position for the 21-year-old’s signature.
