Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has been talking about West Ham, and he has praised manager David Moyes for what he is doing in training to adapt to the current situation.
With the Premier League set to get back up and running on the 17th June after it was postponed in March due to recent events, the clubs are getting back underway at their training grounds, via Premier League.
However Moyes has decided to get his Irons squad to train at the London Stadium, per The Daily Mail, in a bid to get the players used to being on the pitch as it has been such a long time. He is also making them train in full kit to get used to what it will be playing like at the ground behind closed doors, via The Guardian.
Speaking to Football Insider on Moyes deciding to train at the Hammers’ home ground, Whelan said: “It is very smart, a great idea. West Ham need to hit the ground running because they are in trouble. When you are playing on your own turf you get used to the size of the pitch and the environment.
Is Moyes the right man to lead West Ham to Premier League safety?
“I would not be surprised if a few teams do that. It is a good way to get used to playing in the stadium without fans. They have only got a short amount of time so it is a very clever idea from Moyes to do that.
“You do not want any team to have any kind of advantage. Normally home fans give you that edge.”
It’s hard to disagree with Whelan here, Moyes could be a step ahead of the other sides in the Premier League, as the rest of the season will be played in a very different environment than the footballers are used to and they will need to adjust to the new conditions which sees the season completed behind closed doors.
With West Ham only two points away from relegation as it stands, per BBC Sport, they need to be ready to perform from the first minute of their first game if they do not want to return to the Championship.
The idea from Moyes saves the players having to get a feel of what it is in like during the first few minutes of the game and hopefully it will give them an edge over their opponents.
