French football expert Jonathan Johnson believes West Ham transfer target Terem Moffi would prefer to stay in Ligue 1 despite Premier League links.
The Lowdown: Moffi may now take a back seat
Reports have been rife over the last week surrounding West Ham and the Lorient striker Moffi with some even suggesting the two parties were in advanced negotiations to complete a deal.
However, that deal could now be shelved until the summer or at the ever least, until nearer the end of the window with West Ham having recently announced the signing of Danny Ings for around £15 million.
West Ham could still yet move again in the transfer market with reports suggesting that Wolves are interested in a move for Michail Antonio, so if that was to happen the Moffi could still end up at the London Stadium.
The Latest: West Ham dealt transfer blow
Johnson, who is an expert on all things Ligue 1, revealed on Sky Sports that Moffi, despite interest from West Ham and the Premier League, would rather stay in France.
He said: “There is a lot of interest in Moffi but there’s a lot of interest in him from French clubs as well as clubs on the continent. It sounds like he is preferring, at this moment in time, to stay in Ligue 1.
“There are a number of bigger Ligue 1 clubs who are being linked with him, most notably Nice of late, so I think if he is to be on the move it is very possible that he will stay in France at least for the moment.”
The Verdict: Moyes may be happy with his business
Considering Moyes currently has three strikers at the club, two of which have been signed in the last two transfer windows, and the other is the club’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League, it would be bizarre for him to then move for Moffi.
Moyes is going to have a hard enough job as it is trying to keep happy all of Ings, Antonio and Gianluca Scamacca in the second half of the season, although the latter two can have few complaints when they get benched given they’ve only got two and three league goals this season respectively.
While Moffi has been tearing Ligue 1 up this season with 12 goals already to his name he would indeed be coming into a new league so would have to adapt quickly, which may not be easy in a West Ham side that are really struggling this season.
