Speaking in a press conference ahead of West Ham United’s trip to Bramall Lane, Hammers boss David Moyes has confirmed that there is a ‘concern’ over defender Fabian Balbuena – with the Paraguayan having travelled thousands of miles over the international break.
Moyes, speaking to the press, confirmed that the 6 foot 2 ace might not feature against the Blades on Sunday afternoon.
Could Balbeuna's absence be a massive blow?
No, we have Diop back
Moyes on Balbuena
“There is a concern with how long he has been away and he wasn’t arriving back until very late in the afternoon (Thursday) so it is something we need to look at,” Moyes said via football.london.
“It is a consideration, how much sleep we can get him, how much rest we can get him, and get him prepared.
“The one good thing is that we do have an extra day to prepare as we are playing on Sunday so that gives us a little bit of extra time.
“But if not I have Issa Diop fit, I have Craig Dawson fit, so if there are any reasons not to do it then I have got those players available.”
The Scotsman has been utilising Balbuena in a back three alongside Angelo Ogbonna and Aaron Cresswell in recent matches – with wing-backs Aaron Masuaku and Vladimir Coufal pushed further up the pitch in a more attacking role.
Transfer Tavern take
When out of possession, Moyes’ side revert to a five at the back – helping to sure up gaps with Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice sitting just in front of the defensive line.
Balbuena, who has earned plenty of praise lately, is a pivotal figure in that system and Moyes’ latest update that there is a potential concern poses a real dilemma – especially considering he is one of the Hammers’ ‘outstanding‘ defenders.
