West Ham United have shared an injury update regarding defender Kurt Zouma.

The Lowdown: Zouma's injury

Zouma was forced off the pitch through injury 15 minutes into West Ham's 2-0 defeat against Leicester City in their final Premier League game ahead of the World Cup break.

Prior to that, the 28-year-old had played in all but one of the Hammers' league games, with the 1-1 draw against Southampton being the only game he has missed. The east London club have now shared an update regarding the situation and the defender's fitness.

The Latest: West Ham's update

In a recent Twitter post on the club's official account, the Hammers revealed that Zouma has had surgery on the knee injury he picked up in the early stages of the Leicester game. In an attached article on their official website, the club added:

"The French defender will now continue his rehabilitation at Rush Green with the Club’s medical team."

The Verdict: Not ideal

Having played every minute in the league aside from the Southampton draw prior to the Leicester game, this highlights how much of an important figure Zouma is for West Ham and David Moyes.

Across his 14 league appearances, the defender has racked up the second-highest passing accuracy percentage at the club (85.9%).

With more clearances (68) to his name than any other West Ham player, this further highlights how much of an important figure he is for the team at the back and why everyone at the club will have their fingers crossed that he can make a full recovery as quickly as possible.

Despite not giving a time frame for when the £125k-per-week defender could be back in action, the fact that domestic football isn't set to resume until the end of next month will give the Frenchman a good amount of time to recover and hopefully not miss too many games for his club, but it looks as if it could be a lengthy layoff.
