West Ham United are reportedly in the race to land a transfer deal for Spezia defender Jakub Kiwior.

The Lowdown: West Ham's defensive situation

The previous summer transfer window saw the east London club bring in some new defensive reinforcements to David Moyes' squad such as Thilo Kehrer, Nayef Aguerd and Emerson Palmieri.

However, there have been issues raised over some of their other defensive options such as Craig Dawson who has been linked with a move away from the club, and Kurt Zouma who is looking to have a spell on the sidelines with a knee injury.

With all of that in mind, it seems as though the Hammers have found themselves in a race to land another defender currently representing his country in the World Cup.

The Latest: West Ham eyeing Kiwior

According to a recent report from Tuttosport, West Ham are interested in Kiwior, who played the full 90 minutes of Poland's opening World Cup game against Mexico which ended in a 0-0 draw.

The report also adds that the Hammers face competition for his signature from a Serie A trio of Juventus, Napoli and AC Milan.

The Verdict: A big signing for West Ham

As one of the two Spezia players to have started all 15 of their Serie A games this season, this shows just how important he is to the team despite only being 22.

Having also racked up the highest passing accuracy percentage (84.8%) out of players at the club to have made more than five passes this season, this highlights how comfortable Kiwior is on the ball, with the player also able to turn out as a left-back or holding midfielder if required.

Then from a defensive point of view, the centre-back, who his international teammate Robert Lewandowski hailed as an "extraordinary player", has made more clearances (58) than any other Spezia player, as well as having the fourth-highest combined total of tackles and interceptions (39) at the club.

Taking all of this into account, it's clear to see how much of a capable defender Kiwior is and why the likes of West Ham and three of the biggest clubs in Italy are reportedly after him.
