Journalist Dean Jones is gutted by the latest West Ham United injury news involving summer arrival Maxwel Cornet.

The Lowdown: Cornet’s injury

The Hammers looked like they were back on the right track this weekened as they beat Wolves 2-0 at the London Stadium, with goals from Gianluca Scamacca and Jarrod Bowen raising David Moyes’ side up to 15th place in the Premier League table.

Whilst a positive afternoon for the east London club, the fixture was less than ideal for Cornet, who was making his full top-flight debut for the Irons.

After just 34 minutes, the Ivory Coast international was replaced by Pablo Fornals after suffering a calf injury following a challenge made by Daniel Podence.

The Latest: Jones’ claim

After the game, Moyes was questioned by the media over the severity of Cornet’s injury, to which he responded:

“He felt his calf, so that was it. I’ve not had the chance to speak to the medical team yet, I’m not saying it’s a calf strain, but it looks like something to do with his calf.”

Jones believes his absence will come as a blow to West Ham, but more damagingly, it will come as a major stumbling block in the winger’s pursuit of a guaranteed spot in Moyes' starting XI.

Speaking with The Transfer Tavern, the journalist said:

“However bad the problem is, I think it was his calf, however bad that is, it's going to hold him back.

“So, they've got to hope it's not too serious. It's such a shame for him.”

The Verdict: Major blow

Having signed for the Hammers this summer in a deal worth £17.5m, Cornet has already proven to be a useful addition to Moyes’ once-fatigued squad.

Thus far this season, the 26-year-old has averaged an impressive 7.10 match rating in the UEFA Europa Conference League (via SofaScore), having also made five appearances in the Premier League.

Just when the winger was given his chance in West Ham’s starting XI, he immediately suffered a major blow with his injury.

It may take him a while until Moyes gives him a second go in the team, with numerous other attackers fighting for a position in the starting side.
