West Ham United: Nayef Aguerd tipped for big role after the World Cup

West Ham United: Nayef Aguerd tipped for big role after the World Cup -West Ham News

West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd will benefit from his possible involvement in the World Cup, according to Sky Sports-featured injury analyst Ben Dinnery.

The Lowdown: Aguerd’s injury woes

Since arriving at the London Stadium in the summer, the Moroccan defender has spent the majority of his time on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

Having appeared in the Hammers’ two previous Europa Conference games, Aguerd found himself on the substitutes’ bench in the Premier League for the first time in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat against Crystal Palace.

With the east London club having two games left to play before the World Cup break, it appears that the summer recruit has been backed to revive his fortunes at club level once the tournament in Qatar ends.

The Latest: Aguerd to benefit from World Cup

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Dinnery discussed the 26-year-old’s situation and what the next few months could hold for him at West Ham.

He said: “The talk around what impact the World Cup will have on players during the second half of the season? Well, for Aguerd, that’s on the other end of the scale, that’s actually going to help the Hammers as he’s going to be getting those competitive minutes under his belt, and he should be fully refreshed and ready to go in the second half of the season.

“So, the World Cup could be a blessing for West Ham. We might not see him on the pitch before the break, but certainly coming into the second half of the season, I think he’d be a big player for them.”

The Verdict: Hope for Aguerd

Given the length of time that the £50,000-a-week Moroccan has been out of action, it will have been a big positive to have seen him in action in Europe and then making the matchday for the Palace game.

Having played the full 90 minutes in West Ham’s 3-0 win over FCSB last week, Aguerd showed his defensive acumen by making three clearances and winning seven of his 11 duels.

Do you think Aguerd will be a big player for West Ham?

No

If the defender gets the opportunity this week to once again show what he’s capable of producing, this should certainly put him in a good position to get some game-time with his country in Qatar.

Having played every minute of Morocco’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign and both legs of the play-off against DR Congo which qualified his country for the World Cup, Aguerd looks a near-certainty to make Walid Regragui’s squad if he is deemed fit enough for selection.

Looking beyond that, if the Irons centre-back can avoid picking up any injuries throughout the tournament, this will surely put him in with a shout of becoming an important and prominent figure for David Moyes in the second half of the season.
