# West Ham United: Hammers ready to tie down Declan Rice by doubling his wages

**[West Ham United](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league/west-ham/) have had a testing transfer window as there has been a lot of interest for one of their key players in Declan Rice.**

The defensive midfielder is a key asset for the club and this is highlighted by the fact that he is their [captain](https://www.whufc.com/news/articles/2020/october/04-october/team-news-coufal-makes-west-ham-debut-leicester) at the tender age of 21.

He has a special place in the hearts of many Irons fans as he is a [product of their academy](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/declan-rice/profil/spieler/357662), but it seemed possible that he could be [moving to Chelsea](https://metro.co.uk/2020/09/24/declan-rice-pushing-to-sign-for-chelsea-before-transfer-window-closes-13322056/) in this transfer window. A recent report seems to suggest the Hammers understand his importance and are keen to keep him at London Stadium.

### The latest transfer update on Declan Rice

According to [The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/12893607/declan-rice-contract-wage-west-ham-transfer/), West Ham will seek to double Rice’s wages in a new deal. They have managed to keep the England star at the club for another season as the window has shut.

The proposed new deal would make him a top earner on £120,000-a-week and would pin him down to another long-term contract.

### Should West Ham offer Rice this much?

There are pluses and minuses to this development for West Ham. On the plus side, as he averaged 3.1 tackles and two interceptions a game last season, via [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/332325/Show/Declan-Rice), as well as picking up one goal and three assists, keeping hold of such a consistent performer is certainly a boost.

It is good that they have found a way to potentially keep Rice at the club, as he is a vital player for the Irons and there is ample time for the [England international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/declan-rice/profil/spieler/357662) to get even better as his career develops.

However, this is a lot of money to give such a young player on a weekly basis and it might make other players at the club feel like they also deserve a wage increase.

Rice, who is valued at £44.55m by [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/declan-rice/profil/spieler/357662), is a crucial player for West Ham, so if the club can give him a new contract without frustrating other players in the squad, it appears a sensible option.
