# Everton: Toffees ‘in talks’ to sign Maxwel Cornet

**Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth has revealed that [Everton](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/everton-fc-news/) have ‘been in talks’ to sign Maxwel Cornet.**

### The Lowdown: Shining light

Cornet was a shining light in a Burnley team that found themselves relegated from the Premier League last season.

Hailed as a [‘cheat code’ and ‘simply sensational’](https://twitter.com/Buntingfootball/status/1477659716994097157) by journalist Josh Bunting, the Ivory Coast international netted a respectable nine goals from the wing, and made a further two assists in 28 games in total over all competitions ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/maxwel-cornet/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/234781/plus/0?saison=&verein=1132&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=)).

Nonetheless, with the likes of Nick Pope, James Tarkowski and Dwight McNeil leaving the Clarets to join top-flight sides, it would not be a surprise to see Cornet added to that list.

### The Latest: Talks held

Taking to Twitter, [Sheth](https://twitter.com/skysports_sheth/status/1554436455467991041) has revealed that Kevin Thelwell and Co have ‘been in talks’ over the possibility of signing Cornet, but West Ham United have held initial discussions as well:

*“West Ham United have held initial talks with Burnley over the signing of Burnley winger Maxwel Cornet. West Ham thought to favour a loan. Everton have been in talks about signing him. It is understood Cornet has a £17.5m release clause.”*

### The Verdict: Get it done

With the news that Dominic Calvert-Lewin could miss the start of the season through injury – [reports](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-everton-star-dominic-calvert-lewin-ruled-out-for-3-months-in-shattering-blow/) are even claiming the striker could miss three months – the Goodison Park outfit are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements.

Having gained the experience of playing in the Premier League, Cornet should be able to settle in fairly quickly, and the fact that he has a release clause suggests that if it is activated, a deal could accelerate quite rapidly.

At 25 years of age, Cornet already has [67](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/maxwel-cornet/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/234781/plus/0?saison=&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) goals for club and country combined in his career, impressive numbers for a wide player, and so he would offer the Toffees another threat in attack.
