Ademipo Odubeko – his career so far
Even though they can’t claim full credit for developing Ademipo Odubeko in their academy themselves, West Ham United still have a serious star in making on their hands with the incredibly talented 17-year-old centre-forward who’s bound to light up the biggest of stages once he’s ready for a big step up.
But the youngster’s early career has been exclusively spent with the Red Devils as he joined Manchester United as a young kid, clawing his way through their academy and impressing the upper hierarchy along the way too.
Still, despite his obvious progress through the youth ranks at Old Trafford, where he managed to score 35 goals in the academy and bagged on his U18 Premier League debut during the 2018/19 season, Odubeko felt like there was no clear way forward for him if he stayed at Man United. So he declined a reported extension and decided to join the Hammers instead.
And so far, it’s proven to be the right move as the young 17-year-old centre-forward has been enjoying his stay in London. The Ireland-born and raised striker has always been prolific in front of goal and that hasn’t really changed since he arrived at West Ham United.
He made his U18 debut under Kevin Keen in November 2019, scoring a goal after spending only ten minutes on the pitch against Swansea City. And that blistering form continued throughout his inaugural season with Odubeko scoring nine goals in his first eight U18 games for the Irons.
For that reason, it doesn’t really come as a surprise that his first Premier League 2 appearance against Norwich U23s in March 2020 also arrived with a banger. The striker came off the bench for the Hammers in the second half and scored an incredible lob less than four minutes later, once again showing the wast array of his goalscoring skills.
He may still be a fairly fresh signing but Odubeko is certainly one to look out for in the future and his progress should be excellent West Ham news for the fans. Let’s see how he develops in the near future.
Of course, with the 17-year-old still very much being a new kid on the block and a fresh signing for the Irons, it doesn’t surprise that there are no transfer rumours currently surrounding him. But that wasn’t the case last year when he was moving from one club to the other.
The biggest transfer news back then was West Ham’s successful attempt of signing Odubeko, considering that there were reports of multiple European giants prowling around and wanting to do the same thing.
Still, Manchester United losing the youngster and him actually rejecting a contract renewal was the big talking point prior to his signing for the Hammers. Now that they have him, however, they have to ensure he develops properly and slots right into the senior team once the time is right.
Odubeko is a powerful striker with a sharp eye for goal who excels in his movement and lethality inside the box. The 17-year-old can outmuscle the opposition’s defenders and is extremely dangerous when left in isolated scenarios in and around the danger area.
But it’s not only his excellent finishing prowess that enables him to bag goals galore as Odubeko’s sense of positioning and exploiting the free pockets of space means he’s often one step ahead of his markers and can make the most out of virtually any given situation.
He is still quite young and while he is strictly an advanced forward, rarely dropping deep or slotting in other positions on the pitch, the potential beneath the inexperienced exterior is definitely something that should excite the West Ham supporters.
