Alex McLeish has backed West Ham United in any move to sign Tammy Abraham in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: West Ham favourites

As per Football Insider, the London Stadium faithful are now the favourites to sign the Chelsea star, after jumping ahead of Aston Villa in the race for his signature.

Abraham is currently rated at £40m by Thomas Tuchel's side, but it is expected that a fee closer to the region of between £30-35m would be enough to persuade the Blues to sell.

The Latest: McLeish backs Abraham move

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish, who has experience of managing in the Premier League, has backed a move from the East London club to sign Abraham:

“That would be a great move for him.

“He does need to go. These players can’t waste any time not playing first-team football.

“For me, he would be a very good signing.

“These are the prices and everybody knows that. That is not a surprising price.

“I’m sure West Ham, if they want to keep to the kind of level they finished last season, they will continue to bring in players at that kind of level.”

The Verdict: Sign

Even though Abraham did manage to play in a total of 32 games in all competitions at Stamford Bridge in the 2020/21 season, he was often used as a bit-part player and did not start many matches, still managing to score 12 goals and make a further six assists in the process (Transfermarkt).

Given the fact that he is English and just 23 years of age still, if David Moyes' team can negotiate the price down to £30m, it would be a really good bit of business.

Nonetheless, the Hammers desperately need to find some sufficient cover up top for Michail Antonio, especially given the fact that they will be playing in the UEFA Europa League, and so Abraham would be such a smart signing.
