West Ham United are ‘closing’ on a deadline day move for Southampton defender Jan Bednarek after a transfer twist involving Aston Villa.
The Lowdown: Hammers keeping busy…
The Hammers and their manager David Moyes have already been kept very busy throughout the summer transfer window, having completed eight major signings so far.
Alphonse Areola, Nayef Aguerd, Flynn Downes, Gianluca Scamacca, Maxwel Cornet, Thilo Kehrer, Emerson and club record signing Lucas Paqueta have all arrived at the London Stadium, but reports suggest that there could even be more incomings today.
The Latest: West Ham ‘closing’ on Bednarek deal…
According to reports, it appears that the east Londoners are close to signing Bednarek after a transfer twist.
Indeed, Football Insider claim that Villa had a ‘deal in place’ for the 26-year-old, but West Ham’s ‘hijack’ of the move has seemingly propelled Moyes’ side into pole position.
The Irons have apparently ‘ambushed’ their rivals and are ‘closing’ on a ‘deadline day’ move for Bednarek.
The Verdict: Get it done…
Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has previously called the Poland international ‘amazing‘, and going by the player’s numbers last season, that billing is still very much relevant.
According to WhoScored, Bednarek finished 2021/22 as one of Southampton’s top five performers by average match rating and stood out as a colossal defensive presence.
Who should West Ham sign in a last minute deal?
Other (tell us in the comments!)
None of his team-mates made more interceptions or clearances per 90 than the centre-back, with only Oriol Romeu, James Ward-Prowse and Mohammed Salisu playing a higher amount of league minutes (WhoScored).
It seems clear that he would be a stellar rotation option for Moyes to bring in ahead of the transfer deadline.
