Speaking to the press (via Sports Mole), West Ham United manager David Moyes has dropped a transfer revelation involving Brentford's Ivan Toney.

The Lowdown: West Ham in striker hunt...

Since the beginning of the year, West Ham have been trying to get their hands on a new centre-forward and an alternative option to Michail Antonio, with the Scotsman even confirming a January bid for Sevilla's Youssef En-Nesyri.

Antonio has been in unstoppable form so far this season but there are always concerns regarding his fitness, especially considering that he missed 13 games over 2020/21 through injury.

If the Jamaica international were to be sidelined once again, West Ham and Moyes would be left desperately short of natural options for the centre-forward role and may have to rely on makeshift options like Jarrod Bowen or Andriy Yarmolenko.

Consistently linked with new forwards, Moyes has now come out and dropped a revelation involving yet another in Toney.

The Latest: Moyes drops Toney revelation...

Speaking to the media, he commented on links to the Brentford marksman whilst sharing some information. Indeed, the Scot confirmed that West Ham had scouted the player a 'a lot' whilst he was at Peterborough United and even displayed an interest.

"We scouted him a lot at Peterborough," the Irons manager explained.

"Sometimes you find something, sometimes you don't. He was certainly one in the do we don't we category when he was at Peterborough."

However, while Moyes admitted to the interest when Toney was a League One star, he was quick to pour cold water on any alleged interest in the recent summer transfer window, saying: "Any talk about we were going to do something in the summer, that was wrong."

The Verdict: Missed out?

Going by his phenomenal Championship return of 33 goals and 10 assists in all competitions over 2020/21, perhaps not swooping for Toney as an alternative to Antonio was a mistake by West Ham.

The 25-year-old also has plenty of sell-on value and has been heralded as a 'special, special' player by Brentford boss Thomas Frank.

Perhaps new Irons head of recruitment Rob Newman could look to make a return for Toney in January?
