According to a report by italian outlet Il Mattino.it (18:57), West Ham United have joined the race to sign Napoli defensive powerhouse Nikola Maksimovic in a potential swoop – coming as Tottenham, Everton and Fulham also show a keen interest.
Indeed, as per this update by Il Mattino.it, West Ham are ‘on Maksimovic’s tracks‘ alongside the Toffees and both their London rivals – and he could be available to the Premier League side for as little as €10 million (£8.8 million) this month.
West Ham enter Maksimovic race
However, with the Serbian out of contract at the end of this season, West Ham and GSB could snap him up as a free agent – but this report only mentions their apparent interest and does not state if the Hammers have been in contact with Maksimovic’s representatives.
Tottenham, however, have already been in talks with the 29-year-old’s agent, Fali Ramdani, with a view of signing him in the summer for free.
They’re apparently willing to accommodate his salary, but West Ham haven’t given up on the central defender and are still on his trail, according to this report.
Transfer Tavern take
Standing at a towering 6 foot 4 and averaging an impressive 94.8% pass accuracy in Serie A this season when given the opportunity (WhoScored), former Irons boss Slaven Bilic was eager to sign him in 2016.
According to reliable journalist Gianluca Di Marzio (via the Daily Express), West Ham offered the player a four-year deal worth £1.6million-a-year nearly half a decade ago – and now it looks like GSB are eyeing a potential second push to sign Maksimovic.
Time will tell whether the east Londoners lodge an £8.8m bid by the end of January, or if they potentially opt to enter negotiations about a summer move, but he could prove to be a bargain either way.
