Speaking on live TV (via Football Daily), Sky Sports have dropped a West Ham United transfer claim involving Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips.
The Lowdown: West Ham in centre-back hunt…
As per Claret & Hugh, manager David Moyes has set his sights on strengthening at centre-half as well as bringing in a new forward this summer.
The departure of Fabian Balbuena on a free transfer has left the Irons quite short of options in defence with Craig Dawson, Angelo Ogbonna and Issa Diop the only first team regular centre-halves to choose from.
Now, Sky Sports have brought an update on West Ham’s chase for a new defensive option.
The Latest: Sky Sports drop live TV claim…
Speaking live on Sky Sports News, via Football Daily, Sky have revealed a new name on the Irons’ defensive shortlist in Liverpool defender Phillips.
The 24-year-old, who started 15 Premier League games under Jurgen Klopp over 2020/2021, deputised in a weakened Reds defence and served as cover for the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.
“No bid has been received by Liverpool as yet for the defender,” Sky Sports claims (via FD).
“Brighton see him as a replacement for Ben White, Burnley, Newcastle and West Ham are also interested.”
The Verdict: Good option?
Phillips arguably performed well at times given it was his first season as a Premier League regular at Anfield in testing circumstances, with numerous first team stars sidelined over 20/21 due to injury.
He averaged a colossal 5.6 aerial duels per 90, more than any Liverpool player, whilst also making the most clearances (4.8) out of anyone in Klopp’s squad (WhoScored).
The 6 foot 3 colossus, a fairly young and homegrown defender with English top flight experience, could actually come as a brilliant option for Moyes and West Ham.
